Imagine moving your hand through the water and watching the sea light up with blue sparks. That is bioluminescence, one of the most amazing natural shows you can experience in Puerto Vallarta. Here we explain what it is, when you are most likely to see it and what our night boat tour is like.
What is bioluminescence?
It is light produced by living organisms. In the sea it is mainly caused by plankton microorganisms called dinoflagellates: when the water is stirred, by a passing boat, a wave or a swimmer, they give off a flash of blue-green light. The more plankton there is, the brighter the glow.
The moon matters more than the clock
Bioluminescence is faint, so darkness is key. The best nights are around the new moon or when the moon rises late; under a full moon the glow is much harder to see. Before booking, check the moon calendar or ask us and we will suggest the best dates.
What time of year can you see it?
It can appear at different times of the year, but it tends to be brightest with the warm water of summer and fall, when plankton is abundant in the bay. It is a natural phenomenon, so its intensity changes from night to night and cannot be guaranteed.
What the bioluminescence tour is like
- Night departure from Mismaloya Beach, once the sky is dark.
- Bioluminescence viewing in Mismaloya Bay, away from the city lights.
- A stop at El Paredón Beach and night snorkeling to see the glow up close.
- Ride back under the stars, with music on the onboard speaker.
It lasts about 2.5 hours and includes a local guide, life jackets and snorkel gear. Check prices and group rates on the bioluminescence tour page.
Tips to see it better
- Let your eyes adjust: stay off your phone screen for a few minutes and you will see much more.
- Stir the water: the glow appears with movement; splashing or swimming makes it visible.
- Do not expect perfect photos: the light is too faint for most phones. This one is meant to be lived.
- Bring a light sweater and a towel: at night, coming out of the water, the breeze feels cool.
