Paddle boarding is one of the most accessible and relaxing water activities in Puerto Vallarta. You don't need prior experience, just balance, patience and a desire to enjoy the sea at your own pace. In this guide we tell you what paddle boarding is, how to start, where to practice in Vallarta and how to stay safe on the water.
What is paddle boarding?
Paddle boarding (or SUP, for Stand Up Paddle) is a water sport where you stand on a floating board approximately 10 feet long and use a paddle to propel the board forward. It's similar to surfing, but instead of waiting for waves, you generate the movement by paddling. The best part is you can practice in virtually any body of water: ocean, bay, lagoon or even a river.
What is the correct technique?
Position is key: standing on the board, feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent to maintain balance. The paddle is held with both hands, alternating the side you paddle every 3-4 strokes to maintain a straight line. At first it's normal to lose balance and fall. In fact, many instructors say if you're not falling, you're not progressing.
Best places in Puerto Vallarta
For beginners, the Puerto Vallarta bay is the ideal place: calm water, shallow and protected from waves. Las Tules Beach, Conchas Chinas and Banderas Bay in its northern sector are perfect for learning. Once you gain confidence, you can explore toward Los Arcos or the Mismaloya area, where the water is slightly deeper and there's more marine life to discover.
Necessary equipment
You'll need a paddle board (inflatable and solid options available), a paddle adjustable to your height, a life jacket or flotation belt, and a leash (strap) that connects your ankle to the board so you don't lose it if you fall. Our paddle board tours include all equipment: you just need enthusiasm and sunscreen.
Safety tips
Always wear a life jacket or flotation device, even if you're a strong swimmer. Check sea conditions before heading out: strong winds or big waves aren't ideal for beginners. Bring water to stay hydrated, apply biodegradable sunscreen and avoid going alone. It's best to practice with a group or with an experienced guide who can help if needed.
How many days do I need to learn?
Most people manage to stay upright on the board in their first session. However, developing confidence and correct technique usually takes 3-5 sessions. Once you master the basics, paddle boarding becomes your favorite way to relax on the sea: no rush, just floating and enjoying.
