Hidden beaches of Vallarta

On the south coast of Puerto Vallarta there are beaches that almost nobody knows. Not because they're ugly, but because you can only reach them by boat. Majahuitas, Colimillas and Yelapa are three gems that remain peaceful, away from city noise, with crystal clear water and white sands where "mass tourism" doesn't exist. This guide takes you to meet them.

Majahuitas: the most accessible

Just 20 minutes south of Puerto Vallarta, Majahuitas is a small bay with a soft sand beach, natural palms and water so clear you can see fish from shore. The beach has a gentle slope perfect for families with children. There are a couple of rustic restaurants on the sand serving ceviche and grilled fish. Best part: you can go and return the same day, or stay until sunset.

Colimillas: the wildest

More remote than Majahuitas, Colimillas is an almost perfectly curved beach where the water is almost waveless. It's surrounded by green cliffs and has virtually no human development. If you're looking for total disconnection, Colimillas is your place. The sand is coarse, the water is deep near shore, and snorkeling here is excellent. This is the ideal destination for couples seeking privacy.

Yelapa: the most authentic

Yelapa is a small coastal town accessible only by boat. It has a semicircular beach, rustic inns, local food restaurants and the feeling of having traveled back 50 years in time. There are no roads, no mass-market souvenir shops, just the simple life of the town. Many travelers fall so in love with Yelapa that they book a night at a local inn to watch the sunrise from the beach.

How to get to these beaches?

There's no way to get there by car or on foot. The only way is by boat. Our private tours or group tours take you to any of these beaches, with time to swim, snorkel, eat and simply relax. Tours usually last between 4 and 6 hours and depart early in the morning to make the most of daylight.

What to bring and how to prepare

Bring sunscreen (biodegradable is better), a towel, cash for restaurants, and a relaxed attitude. The sea can be a bit rough on the crossing, so if you're prone to seasickness, eat something light before boarding. Hidden beaches don't have developed public facilities, so plan accordingly. Bring a camera: these places deserve to be remembered.

Best time to visit

November to March is the best time: warm temperatures, less rain and calmer seas. In summer the water is warm but waves can be larger. In any season, these beaches remain incredibly peaceful compared to central Vallarta.
