Enjoying Puerto Vallarta from the sea is an unforgettable experience, but like any water activity, it carries risks that must be managed. Safe water tours begin before boarding the boat: knowing your physical condition, choosing the right operator, bringing proper equipment and following instructions. This guide teaches you how to minimize risks and maximize fun.
Mandatory equipment
Every water tour that respects safety should include life jackets in sufficient quantity for everyone. These jackets aren't accessories — they're the barrier between you and an emergency. Make sure your jacket is properly fitted (it shouldn't move if we pull it upward) and is in good condition, with no cracks or visible damage. It's also mandatory to have a first aid kit onboard, a communication radio and rescue equipment.
Sun protection
On the sea, the sun reflects in the water and doubles its intensity. Applying sunscreen is mandatory, not optional. Biodegradable sunscreen is the best choice because it doesn't damage the marine ecosystem. Apply it generously (don't skimp) 15 minutes before entering the water, and reapply every 2 hours or after swimming. Wear polarized sunglasses to protect your eyes, and consider wearing a rash guard (lycra shirt) that protects you and helps you maintain body heat.
Physical condition and limitations
Most water tours are designed for people in moderate to good physical condition. If you have heart problems, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or have other health conditions, let us know when booking. The operator (us in this case) can adapt the tour or recommend a more suitable one. It's not embarrassing; it's responsibility. Children under 6 generally cannot participate in certain tours due to safety reasons.
Choose the right operator
A good water tour operator must have: regulatory licenses and permits, guides certified in first aid and water rescue, regularly inspected vessels, and a clean safety record. At Estefany's Tours, our boats are certified, our guides are trained and we have a track record of safe operation for several years. Don't hesitate to ask for credentials and check reviews.
Danger signs and when to cancel
Not every day is ideal for a water tour. Strong winds, high waves, a storm on the horizon or bad weather are valid reasons to cancel or postpone. A responsible operator will cancel the tour if conditions aren't safe. If conditions worsen during the tour, the guide has the authority to shorten the activity or return earlier than planned. Trust these professionals: they prefer a disappointed customer today over a customer in danger.
What to do in emergencies
Before departure, the guide should give a safety briefing. Pay attention. Know where life jackets are, how to put one on if you aren't already wearing one, where the first aid kit is and what the signals are for different types of emergencies. If something goes wrong, stay calm. A calm body floats better. Follow the guide's instructions exactly. If someone feels unwell or experiences panic in the water, notify immediately.
After the tour
Sunburn takes time to appear. After the tour, rinse with fresh water to remove salt, apply moisturizer to your skin and drink plenty of water. If you experience persistent dizziness, nausea or any unusual symptoms, alert the guide immediately. It's rare, but better to be safe.
